Microsoft thinks that it is time to find out what makes a programmer (is ma sorry, a “softie”, will explain why I used this) tick – or should that be tap. This isn’t the place to speculate on the deep connections between the creative-logical structure of music and software development – although it is obvious that they are closely related – but Microsoft’s survey of the UK developers revealed some interesting (but disturbing) facts.
First, more that 80% of the softies surveyed enjoy listening to music when writing code, and the most popular true to inspire their work is Coldplay’s “Yellow” (I am blue now), perhaps dispelling the myth that the softie only listen to heavy metal. However, the most popular music to code to category is “Rock”. The top band was also Coldplay, followed by U2, Oasis and Stereophonics (What!!!). of the softies surveyed more than 29% claim, that rap or hip hop was the most off-putting music to code by. The other genes that softies where least likely to listed to whilst working where country music (12%) , ambient music (9%) and opera (8%).
